Urban areas, trading centers, and near schools: 50 km/h

Highways and open roads: Typically 80–110 km/h, depending on signage and road classification 

Special zones like school areas and pedestrian crossings are strictly regulated, with mandatory signage and speed bumps to enforce compliance  .

Fines for speeding are graduated based on how much the speed limit is exceeded: 

1–5 km/h over limit: Ksh 500

6–10 km/h over limit: Ksh 3,000

11–15 km/h over limit: Ksh 3,000

16–20 km/h over limit: Ksh 10,000

Over 20 km/h: Subject to heavier fines or jail time, depending on severity  .

Repeat offenders exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h three times may face a driving license suspension of at least three years .

The NTSA has implemented digital speed cameras on major highways that automatically detect violations and issue instant fines. Offenders receive notifications via SMS, detailing the offense and requiring immediate payment through mobile money platforms like M-Pesa .

Failure to stop at a pedestrian crossing: Ksh 3,000

Driving on or through a pavement or pedestrian walkway: Ksh 5,000

Failure to obey police officer directions: Ksh 3,000

Failure to stop when signaled by a police officer: Ksh 5,000

Causing obstruction by leaving a vehicle on the road: Ksh 10,000

Failure to display reflective triangles when obstructing: Ksh 3,000
